The UK Government scraps loans for forced marriage victims

Thursday 10th January 2019

The Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed that the charge has been scrapped with immediate effect. Victims of forced marriages brought back to the UK will not be asked to take out a loan to repay the cost of their rescue.

Previously, victims of forced marriage returning home were asked to fund plane tickets, food and shelter themselves and those who were unable to afford, were asked to take a small loan from the British Foreign Office.

The news has been welcomed by various campaigners and groups including Southall Black Sisters and Muslim Women's Network UK.
